WHAT IS A DAY AT THE
CAPITOL?
A day at the Capitol provides an opportunity
for school social workers and school
psychologists to come together and educate
state lawmakers about how we address
student barriers to learning and academic
success in cost effective ways. This is a
professional development day, not a political
lobby day.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
- Current or past school social workers and
school psychologists - Students interested in the field of social work
or psychology - Friends and supporters of school social
work, school psychology, school mental
health services, and public education
LEARNING GOALS
- Deepen your understanding of current
legislation which impacts education and the
students, families, schools, and communities
we serve. - Identify effective ways to advocate and share
your story with key policymakers to influence
change. - Initiate and/or build relationships with
legislative representatives and association
lobbyist. - Practice developing effective messaging to
impact public policy change.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
SONJA REYES
Sonia Reyes is the President and CEO of the
Reyes Equity Institute, providing consulting,
training, and strategic planning services to
private and public entities that are ready to
provide inclusive services to Latinos,
Immigrants, and queer communities. She
serves as the Vice-Chair, of the City of Des
Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission
and as a director for the ACLU of Iowa Board.
Sonia advocates and serves as an ongoing
resource for Iowans of Latino heritage,
government agencies, businesses, and other
organizations by coordinating and
participating in statewide economic, social,
and cultural efforts. She has been doing
grassroots work with the Latino and
LGBTQIA Communities in Iowa for over 20
years. She is a national speaker on Latino,
LGBTQIA, immigration, youth, and
intersectionality topics.

“Lawmakers Breakfast.” Breakfast on your own.
9:15 – 10:15 Keynote: Sonia Reyes room 305 in the Statehouse
10:15 – 11:30 Advocacy collaboration, consultation, and coaching
11:30 – 3:00 Working lunch in the Statehouse cafeteria on your own. Meet with
legislators, observe the legislative session, attend committee meetings.
