NASP Delegate Letter June 2013

I am pleased to share the latest NASP news with you and hope you have a wonderful end of the school year!

NASP recently launched a new Career Center. Newly posted jobs are available only to members for the first week that they are posted, letting you get a jump on applying! Create job alerts, upload your resume, and browse over 600 jobs in the new Career Center at http://www.jobtarget.com/home/home.cfm?site_id=15381.

Read the latest NASP Communique at http://www.nasponline.org/publications/cq/index.aspx?vol=41&issue=8. Articles include ‘Pediatric School Psychology,’ ‘Supporting Children Facing the Deployment of a Parent,’ and ‘Assessing and Treating Childhood Anxiety in School Settings.’

On June 3rd, the White House hosted an event to officially begin the national conversation to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.  To aid in this effort, NASP, in conjunction with the American School Counselor Association and the School Social Work Association of America is working to develop resources that schools can use to educate students and staff about mental illness.  In addition, NASP has partnered with the National PTA to develop a webinar that will focus on educating parents about signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to navigate school and community systems to access mental health services.  NASP will be releasing these resources soon.

Summertime means an increase in severe weather and is a good time to review the NASP crisis resource, ‘Helping Children After a Natural Disaster: Information for Parents and Teachers’ at http://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/naturaldisaster_ho.pdf.

Are you are looking for advanced level training that is practical and practitioner focused? Join us for the NASP 2013 Summer Conferences. With up to 18 hours of documented NASP-, APA-, and NBCC-approved CPD available at each conference, you can also earn credits for your NCSP renewal. Register at www.nasponline.org/conventions/2013/summer-conferences/index.aspx and come to Cincinnati, OH, July 8–10 and Albany, NY, July 22–24.

Make sure you’re armed with the latest research and practices to help you as you plan for next school year. Whether you’re reading through some of NASP’s new publications (https://iweb.nasponline.org/iweb/Purchase/SearchCatalog.aspx), watching sessions in the Online Learning Center(http://nasp.inreachce.com/), or researching on the NASP website(http://www.nasponline.org/resources/index.aspx), there are plenty of ways to get the evidence based, practitioner friendly resources you need.

It has been a pleasure serving as your NASP representative this year. I hope you continue to find your membership of great value.

Sincerely,

Charlotte Wieck
